Main Types of Solenoid Valves

Home / News & Insights

Direct-acting, assisted-lift and pilot-operated valve designs.

Direct-acting solenoid valves: energizing the coil produces magnetic force that lifts the closing element from its seat. When power is removed, a spring returns the element to close the valve. This design can operate without a pressure differential; operating limits depend on the specific product.

Assisted-lift or semi-direct-acting valves: this design combines direct action with pilot assistance. At low differential pressure the solenoid initiates the opening mechanically; with sufficient differential pressure, pressure forces assist the main valve. The spring or medium pressure closes the valve after power is removed.

Pilot-operated valves: energizing the solenoid opens a pilot passage, changing chamber pressure. The resulting pressure differential moves the main closing element. De-energizing the coil closes the pilot passage and restores the pressure balance required to close the main valve. These designs require the specified operating pressure conditions.

Valve construction may use a diaphragm or piston, combined with direct, assisted or pilot operation. Products may also be categorized by their fluid, temperature, pressure, electrical supply or intended function, including water, steam, refrigeration, gas, oil and hydraulic service. Always confirm the current model specifications for the application.
