An archived technical introduction to electromagnetic valve actuation.
The original article introduces SMC and solenoid valves as components used in industrial automation. A solenoid valve is an electromagnetically controlled actuator used to regulate the direction, flow or speed of a fluid in a control system.
Different valve designs serve different roles, including check, safety, directional and speed-control functions. Switching the coil’s electrical supply changes the valve position and therefore the flow path.
In a pneumatic system, compressed air stores and supplies energy. Compressors provide the air, cylinders convert air pressure into movement, and valves direct the flow according to the control requirements. Displays, switches and other supporting components complete the system.
In a hydraulic system, controlled oil flow moves a cylinder piston and piston rod, which in turn drives the connected mechanism. By switching the electrical current to the solenoid, the system controls mechanical movement.
